Marseilles Lock and Dam Historic District is significant as a component of the Illinois Waterway, which was developed to provide a navigable route from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River and beyond. In addition, the south headrace dam features Tainter gates that measured twice as long as any in existence in 1933, making them an important development in the technology of dams. Those in the north headrace dam are also much longer than any built during the same time period.
