Built before 1894, 1009 East 13th Street resembles creole cottages in New Orleans which were once closely associated with Brownsville through shipping. The steeply pitched roof punctuated by dormers and canted over a porch as well as the interior chimney are characteristic of creole cottages in New Orleans in the early 1800s.
