One of the oldest in the State of Maryland, the Caroline County Jail and Sheriff`s House has been in continuous use as a jail since 1907 when it was built during a period of marked cultural, commercial and economic expansion of the town of Denton. Occupying a prominence overlooking the Choptank River, Caroline County`s impressive Colonial Revival Sheriff`s House faces the Court House green and is surrounded by substantial residences built during the first decade of the Twentieth Century. The Sheriff`s House and Jail was an elegant answer by a beleaguered county government to years of local and statewide criticism regarding the inadequacies of the preceding prison facility.
