National Register of Historic Places - Paul Mohrbacher House
Statement of Significance: The Paul Mohrbacher House is an architecturally significant element in Cologne's streetscape. It is historically significant due to its association with Paul Mohrbacher -- founder of Cologne, longtime Cologne businessman and civic leader. A 1915 Carver County history summarizes Mohrbacher's contribution to Cologne's history. In that year Holcombe and Bingham wrote", this esteemed resident of Cologne is one of those who have known the village and taken part in its activities throughout its whole existence. He is one of those who presided at its birth, watched over and protected it in childhood, and have contributed to its advancement through all its subsequent career. In 1880, soon after the Chicago, Milwaukee and St, Paul Railroad established a depot in Cologne, Paul Mohrbacher laid out the village on land owned by his father. He owned the first saloon in its proprietor for forty-one years. He also operated a general store. In 1880, Paul Mohrbacher and three other Cologne businessmen started a flour mill. This mill, although modernized, is significant as the longest continuously operating industry in Cologne. Paul Mohrbacher was also engaged in a local lumber trade for several years. In addition to operating many successful businesses, Mohrbacher served as mayor of Cologne for two years and treasurer of the village and township two years.
