The Peoria Lock and Dam site is significant as a component of the Illinois Waterway, which provided a navigable route from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River and beyond. Peoria Dam is also significant as one of the few surviving examples of a dam with Chanoine wicket gates in this country.
