Wanna Buy?
In an article on the website racketmn.com, co-owner and editor Jay Boller gushed about the house at 1105 North Hamilton St. in Saint Croix Falls for the blog’s popular “Wanna Buy?” series. Based in Minnesota, Boller calls out the “mid-century stunner” that caught his eye even though it’s in neighboring Wisconsin. He notes that it’s less than an hour away from St. Paul, the Minnesota state capital.

Short Term Rentals In Rockpile?
An article in 2024 in the Inter-County Leader (Northwestern Wisconsin’s News Leader) highlights a debate occurring at the time in the Rockpile neighborhood. People started buying homes to turn them into short-term rentals for vacationers, such as properties listed on Airbnb and Vrbo. Residents of the community were concerned about losing the sense of unity that was shared since the beginning of the development.

A Unique Vacation Home
In 1965, a group of ten families got together to build a small community of vacation homes in St Croix Falls, Wisconsin. They named the little neighborhood “The Rockpile” and developed it on a small piece of land next to the St. Croix River, the natural boundary between Wisconsin and Minnesota. In addition to their individual homes, each family owned 10% of Rockpile Commons, a one and one-half acre bit of nature that included a pond with a fountain. Two of the homes, including the house at 1105 and also the neighboring 1109 North Hamilton were joined by a short bridge-style walkway, another indicator of how close-knit the community was. Although the corporation that had originally established The Rockpile community was eventually dissolved, residents maintain a sense of connection with their fellow neighbors. Arlo and Betty Miller commissioned architect Arthur Svendsen to build their house in Rockpile. Not much information is available on Svendsen, but he is known to have built other houses in the region. He drew inspiration from the works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Eero Saarinen, making use of the natural materials available in the area and blending houses into the landscape, a style of design now recognized as mid-century modern.
