A carpenter named James Heffernan built this quaint, Italianate style house for his family circa 1872. The two-story, frame building is clad with its clapboard siding and corner boards, and has a hip roof with a prominent brick chimney. Its low-pitched roof with widely overhanging eaves and decorative brackets are characteristics of the Italianate style that was popular in the United States in the mid- to late- nineteenth century. The front entry is adorned by a large, arched entablature. The house features six-over-six double-hung windows with wood surrounds. According to historical maps, this house was originally built with a one-and-a-half-story, rear wing with a gable roof. A one-story, gable roof addition was located on the rear elevation of this wing. This long, narrow, rectangular plan of the house is still present today. According to city directories, James and his wife Anna, a teacher at the Central School, lived here through the turn-of-the-century and raised two children in the house, Mary and James Jr., a onetime bookkeeper at the Stillwater Hardware Company.
