Boone Hall Plantation

Built in 1936, by Thomas A. Stone (1900-1965) and his wife Alexandra Ewing (1896-1961), it replaced an older house on what is one of America's oldest plantations. It came into the possession of Major John Boone (1632-1711) by marriage in 1681 and it remained in the Boone family until 1811. The spectacular "Avenue of Oaks" that lines the drive up to the main house was planted in 1743 by Capt. Thomas Boone (1694-1749).

The Horlbeck brothers purchased the plantation from the Boones and to meet the demand in Charleston they manufactured bricks on the property, with 85 slaves producing 4 million bricks a year by 1850. They also built the many slaves cabins and cottages that can still be seen today. The Stones purchased Boone Hall from the Horlbeck family in 1936. Alexandra had previously lived at Merrywood in Virginia, now famous as the childhood home of Jackie Kennedy. They replaced the existing timber frame plantation house with the 10,000-square foot Colonial-Revival mansion that stands in its place today. The plantation has been in continual operation for over 320 years and tours are available of both the house and gardens. The actor Ryan Reynolds was married here and it has also featured in several TV shows and movies, notably the mini-series North & South (1985).
