The Queen Emma Building was designed by Jo Paul Rognstad for Dr. Richard You. Dr. You was an active participant in the Olympic games, as a coach and a doctor. Notably, he was Tommy Kono`s (weight-lifting gold medal winner) coach at the Helsinki Olympics. The Queen Emma Building was originally known as the York Building, for the York Barbell Company which made weight lifting equipment. The owner was also a close friend of Dr. You. The General Contractor for the job was the Hirano Brothers Company, Richard Hirano, President. The project architect, Rognstad, is still in business in Honolulu primarily designing high-rise condominiums.
