Joseph H. Finch House, 128 South Main St English, Crawford County, IN
The Joseph H. Finch House is architecturally significant on the local level as a well-preserved example of a small-scale, Queen Anne-style residential building, and is the best example of this style in the town of English. Its asymmetrical massing, polygonal bays, patterned-shingle gable fronts, and porch with decorative woodwork are all hallmarks of this style. The interior is also notable for its wealth of original woodwork, including three Queen Anne-style fireplace mantels. The house was built in 1898 by Joseph H. Finch, a locally-prominent hotelier and businessman, during a period of prosperity and increased building activity in English. This period coincided with the arrival of the railroad in 1883, the town`s incorporation in 1884, and the relocation of the Crawford County seat to English in 1893.
