The tavern historically held commercial and social significance for the unincorporated community of Cato. The tavern was the first of only two licensed drinking establishments in the area. Its second-floor recreation hall - used for dancing and sports activities - was a center for community social life, being cited as such by an early chronicler of the area. The building housed the headquarters of the community`s largest fraternal organization, the Order of Modern Woodsmen.
