Daughter Sophronia Passes Away
In 1939, the last of the children of Daniel and Frances Hall died. Sophronia passed away in North Carolina. She had escaped the winter chill of Long Island for the warmth of the southern state, probably visiting with her in-laws the Sherrill family. Her husband Hiram Sherrill died in 1920. Sophronia was buried in Sag Harbor.

Daughter Helen Passes Away
Of all the children of Daniel and Frances Douglas, only one didn’t stay on the east coast, tied to Sag Harbor. Helen, aka Hellen or Nellie, is listed on the 1880 census as living in Troy, New York. On the census for 1900-1930 her home was made in Seattle, Washington. Why would she move so far away, to the West Coast? In 1880, when she was XX, she bore the married name of Stevenson, so perhaps her husband’s business called him away. She died in 1933 at the age of 81, and was buried in the state of Washington.

The 1870 Federal Census
On the 1870 census, compared to previous years the family has reduced dramatically in size. Daniel died three years earlier, and the two sons, Alden and William, moved out to start their adult lives. Still residing in the house are: Francis Douglas, age 46, “keeps house” Nellie Douglas, aka Helen, age 18 And Sophronia, or “Saphronia” as spelled here, age 16. A few lines away from the Douglas family are their next door neighbors, the Cooper family. Their daughter Annie Cooper Boyd, listed here as Franny B. age 5, grew up to become a renowned artist. She studied art in New York, and lived with her husband in Brooklyn, maintaining the cottage as a summer home. Eventually they returned to Sag Harbor full time, and stayed there for the rest of their years. Today the house is the Sag Harbor Historical Museum, where many of her paintings are on display.

The 1860 Federal Census
On the 1860 census the family appears again, although Douglas was incorrectly spelled with two ’s’ by the census taker. Listed are: Daniel Douglas, age 37 His wife Frances, age 37 Son William age 14 Son Alden age 11 And added since the 1850 census: Daughter Ellen age 9 And Daughter Sophronia age 6. Sophronia was apparently as odd a name then as it seems to be today; the census taker went through many changes trying to get the spelling right, leaving the name nearly illegible! Included in the listing is Lucretia Brown, Daniel's aunt, sister to his mother.

Charles Carroll Douglas
On the 1850 federal census, Daniel H. Douglas’s brother is counted as a resident of the home, listing Artist as his occupation. When he was 18 in 1844, he started to study miniature portrait painting. In 1847, when he was ready to open his own business, he found to his dismay that miniature portraits were out of style; people were interested in a new process called daguerreotyping, an early form of photography. This resulted in a much more realistic representation of the subject. With this in mind, Charles headed to New York City to learn daguerreotyping adding to his artistic skills. When he was confident in his progress, he returned to Sag Harbor to open a business. Additionally in 1848, he began to learn the fledgling art of photography, expanding his business. However due to ill health, possibly brought on by his exposure to the chemicals of his trade, he retired in 1855 for a farm life.

Both Daniel and Frances were born and raised in the village, and became familiar figures in the community.
