History Overview
Before Nike, There Was Craddock. In 1897, shoe baron John W. Craddock built this Lynchburg mansion as the face of his growing footwear empire. The John W. Craddock House, designed by architect Edward G. Frye, blends Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque styles and still bears Craddock’s initials above the porch. Built at the height of the Craddock-Terry Shoe Company’s rise — once the largest shoe manufacturer in the South — the home reflected the ambition of a man whose company turned Lynchburg into an industrial powerhouse long before global brands like Nike dominated footwear.
