Castle Hill
Built in 1924, for Richard Teller Crane Jr. (1873-1931) and his wife Florence Higinbotham (1870-1949). He is not to be confused with his nephew of the same name who lived at the historic Westover Plantation in Virginia. Castle Hill is a 59-room mansion covering 56,881-square feet, designed by Chicago architect David Adler and inspired by Ham House in England. It is one of the most iconic Gilded Age Estates in Massachusetts and the 30th Largest House in the United States. The stunning landscaped gardens with sea views were designed by the Olmsted Brothers, sons of Frederick Law Olmsted. After Mrs Crane died in 1949, she left Castle Hill to The Trustees of Reservations who continue to operate it today as a popular tourist attraction and venue.
