The building, which has not been altered in any significant manner since it was constructed in 1912, is considered to be an outstanding example of Gothic Revival design influence as represented by public buildings in Iowa. It is also considered to be a good execution of library building design from the firm of Proudfoot, Bird & Rawson, the most prolific architectural firm in Iowa during the early twentieth century.
