National Register of Historic Places - Ephraim Steffens House

Statement of Significance: The Steffens House is significant for its High Victorian style and integrity, and as a prominent representative of the commercial prosperity of the community of Spring Valley during its early boom years in the 1870s. Constructed in 1877, it was the life-long home of the builder, Ephraim Steffens, who was a successful local financier, entrepreneur, and politician. In the 1870s, several of the most prominent families of Spring Valley constructed expensive dwellings to signify their new wealth and status. This house is one of two houses (the other being the William Strong Estate) from this small group to survive with virtually complete architectural integrity. The present owner recognizes the house's historical and architectural significance and is interested in its preservation.
