The David Luckert House - NPS
The David Luckert House is, the oldest known residence in the old Saint Anthony Hill area of Saint Paul, an area which saw some of the first land development outside of, the city limits during the territorial period. It is also the last known residence to have existed originally along the route of the old Saint Anthony Road, the first overland stage route, traveling west from the terminus of river transportation on the Mississippi. Built-in the late 1850 by David Luckert, a local stonemason and maintained through the nineteenth century by the Luckert family, the house is a superb example of masonry craftsmanship. It is constructed of locally quarried limestone; its trimmed stone is laid in random courses. Its architectural character is also significant, for although being primarily vernacular in style, it is representative of the pure, simple, straightforward appearance of frontier residential construction. It reflects that transitional phase in architecture when houses such as this hinted yet at their federal style heritage and also foretold of the Italianate style to soon follow. ...
