Smart Block, 6 Main St Montello, Marquette County, WI

Due to its unusual architecture, sheer size, and conspicuous location, the Smart Block has a tremendous presence in downtown Montello. As a fine example of the Renaissance Revival the only of its kind in the commercial district it displays the characteristic rusticated facade, arched openings and strong horizontal lines. The Smart Block occupies a prominent site at the corner of Main and East Montello streets. The original owners of this building probably chose the location they did because of its proximity to the nearby granite quarry, and the readily available pool of consumers the granite company provided. Like other buildings near the quarry, this building has housed stores for the majority of its existence.
