First Congregational Church, 62 Centre St Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA

The First Congregational Church`s architecture illustrates the conflict of carpenter classic and carpenter gothic styles of the mid-nineteenth century; trompe l`oeil painting on interior west wall and ceiling. The Church was completely restored in 1969. / This church, one of the few buildings on the island with Gothic Revival details, was erected in 1833-34 on the site of the earlier meetinghouse which was moved to make way for it and became the vestry. Not long after construction the church was extended to the west by one bay; also part of the steeple was taken down for safety. In 1852, the interior walls and ceiling were frescoed with trompe l`oeil painting, but this has since been covered over.
