Piper Farm
I was purchasing this property before it was put on the market and had agreed on a price with the seller. I was going to restore the barn as the house was in really good condition with a functioning well, septic, and furnace. I had been a licensed contractor specializing in historic restoration for many years. Just as I had put together all the funds to go ahead with the purchase the seller sold it on the open market. I had been pursuing this property for over a year. The current owner had planned on demolishing the house and barn and replacing it with storage garages as he own the storage facility next door. The city denied the commercial zoning he was looking for. It now sits as a testament to a failed real estate deal. The owner has no interest in selling and told me he will just give it to his kids. I'm not really sure what that means. It is now in the midst of "demolition by neglect."

National Register of Historic Places - Daniel S. Piper House
Statement of Significance: The Daniel S. Piper House is Minnesota's only known surviving example of an interconnected New England style farmstead, where all the farm buildings; woodshed, summer kitchen, granary, barn, and farmhouse, are constructed as one contiguous building. The architectural style reflects the "Yankee" heritage of the Piper family, being executed as a late example of the Greek Revival motif. Daniel Piper immigrated to Minnesota in 1877, purchasing the farm in November of that year. He commenced construction of the complex, utilizing the talents of four master carpenters from New Hampshire, who completed the building late in 1877. Materials for the building were top grade, as Piper had been a lumberman in the East, and he personally supervised their selection. This has likely added to the excellent aging of the building which except for the rear half of the barn, remains in good structural condition. The farm complex remains an excellent symbol of the New England heritage of many early Minnesota pioneers.
