National Register of Historic Places - Michael Scanlan House (Norman Borgen Residence)
Statement of Significance: Constructed in the early 1890s, the Michael Scanlan House is significant as a well-articulated and preserved local example of the Queen Anne style, as well as a representative of the Scanlan family in general, and Michael Scanlan in particular. In 1856, John Scanlan, Sr., an Irish immigrant, was the first settler at the future site of Lanesboro. Later, with the formation of the Lanesboro Townsite Company in 1868, land was purchased from the Scanlan family. Including one of John's sons, Michael. Michael had been born in Ireland in 1840 and arrived in Fillmore County soon after his parents. Following the establishment of the community Michael became successful in commerce, real estate, and insurance, and represented the area in the Minnesota State Legislature in 1869 and 1870. One of Lanesboro's most prominent citizens, he built the present house at the height of his prosperity.
