Workingmen`s Houses, Nicholas M. Sutton House, 9 Locust St Dubuque, Dubuque County, IA
Although its scale, configuration, fenestration and use of materials are similar to nearby structures on Dodge Street built over thirty years earlier, the Nicholas M. Sutton House illustrates the subtle effects of stylistic changes on this relatively modest house type. The slightly increased height to create more attic space, the frame window architraves (now removed) and fish-scale shingles in the gable (now covered with aluminum siding) distinguish this house as a more architecturally self-conscious example of the simple gable ended box - the prevalent house type in this neighborhood.
