Senator Elihu B. Washburne House, 908 Third St Galena, Jo Daviess County, IL
Begun in 1843 in the Greek Revival style. In 1859, the house was doubled in size with an addition in the rear. The following year, projecting bay windows and a porch were added to the south elevation, and these reflect the Italianate style. In 1968, it was purchased by Illinois. The 2-story brick building with partial basement was initially designed and superintended in construction by its owner, Elihu B. Washburne (1816-1887), attorney, friend, and benefactor of U.S. Grant. Washburne would later serve in Grant`s cabinet as Secretary of State and Ambassador to France.
