The building was the home of James S. Hill, president and founder of Forsyth Savings and Trust Company, one of the first Black bankers in Winston-Salem. Hill was one of the nine incorporators of Slater Industrial Academy, now Winston-Salem State University. With the J.W. Paisley House and the S.G. Atkins house, the Hill House was part of Columbian Heights, the first subdivision in Winston-Salem for black professionals and businessmen.
