Minnesota Historic Homes Octogon

927 W 3rd St, Red Wing, Minnesota This rare beauty in Red Wing, Minnesota was built in 1857 by James Lawther at the ripe old age of 25. Born in Ireland, he immigrated to the states in his teens and settled in Red Wing in 1855. He quickly became a prominent business man in the area, known for his real estate dealings and as a civic leader. Looks like he was also elected in 1861 as the mayor. Reportedly he loved the Octagon design of the home for its best use of space and added to the health and harmony of its inhabitants. A few years after the original structure was built on its 18-inch solid rock foundation, Lawther added a kitchen, dining room, servants quarters, and carriage house. Currently the home is under renovation, according the property owners website , which has been run as a bed and breakfast in the past.
