Corning Building, 100 Pearl St Hartford, Hartford County, CT
The Corning Building is an example of the Art Moderne, of which there are few examples in Hartford. The front elevation achieves its austere effect through the use of sophisticated proportions, planar relationships and fine materials. The central stairwell just inside the front door incorporates a stainless steel stair railing in what is perhaps the only commercial streamlined interior in the city. Lester B. Scheide, the architect, conducted what was probably the largest practice in the city in the 1930s.
