Bethlehem Steel Company Shipyard, Machine Shop, 1201-1321 Hudson St Hoboken, Hudson County, NJ

The Machine Shop is the most recognizable structure within the Bethlehem Steel Company Shipyard complex as a consequence of its siting on the yard`s Hudson Street frontage. The oldest section of this structure was built as a machine shop by the W. & A. Fletcher Company during the initial development of the yard in 1890. The building was enlarged twice (in 1906 and 1944) and remained in use as a machine shop until the closing of the yard in 1984.

The Boiler Shop/Blacksmith Shop is sited to the east of the Machine Shop within the Bethlehem Steel Company Shipyard complex. This structure was built by the W. & A. Fletcher Company during the initial development of the yard in 1890 to house the facility`s boiler and blacksmith shops. The Machine Shop and the Boiler Shop/Blacksmith Shop building served as the central core of the yard during the Fletcher term of occupation. During the Bethlehem Steel Company tenure this building housed the copper, pipe, and turbine shops.

The South Warehouse is sited within the southern section of the Bethlehem Steel Company Shipyard complex. This structure was built adjacent to the W. & A. Fletcher Company shipyard circa 1908. It remained in use as a warehouse until 1943, at which time it was purchased by the Bethlehem Steel Company to allow for the expansion of the yard. A substantial program of alterations to the building followed, and the South Warehouse provided office, shop, and storage space until the closing of the yard in 1984.
