Rose Graham Freeman and James Allen House - National Register of Historic Places
Statement of Significance: The Freeman House is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion C at the local level of significance as an exceptional representation of the work of a prominent architectural firm, and as an excellent example of Craftsman residential architecture in Pasadena. It is one of the most prominent residential commissions of architects Arthur S. and Alfred Heineman located in a historically significant subdivision in Pasadena. The Freeman House exemplifies the values of design, craftsmanship, and materials which embodied the philosophy of Arts and Crafts period residential architecture as outlined in the Multiple Property Submission “The Residential Architecture of Pasadena, CA 1895-1918: The Influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement.”^ The interior spaces contribute to the significance of the house, in particular the first floor public spaces and the extensive collection of tile work by nationally known designer and artisan Ernest Batchelder. The period of significance is 1913, when construction was completed on the house.
