Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, 17 Broadway, Newport, Newport County, RI

The dwelling was constructed by Stephen Mumford, a minister, but it is better known for its eighteenth-century occupants including Colonial Governor Richard Ward and Tory pamphleteer Martin Howard. John Wanton purchased the house, at auction, after the confiscation of Tory or Loyalist property. His daughter married David Lyman, and her daughter married Benjamin Hazard. The house remained in the Hazard family until 1927, when it became a house museum. At this time the architect Norman Isham was retained to oversee a restoration of the building.
