A Tour Bus Ban is Passed
In 2018 the board of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency voted to approve a ban on vehicles that could hold nine or more passengers, their target being tour buses. Tourists had long been a nuisance in the neighborhood as they made their trek to take pictures of the iconic structure. Neighbors approved of the restriction but hoped that more could be done to reduce the traffic and crowds.

Renovations Cause a Commotion
In 2017, Jeff Franklin obtained permits for renovations to the home's exterior. Franklin's neighbors, already annoyed at all the fans that stop by the house for pictures, believe that his intention is to bring the house back to its appearance as the exterior of the family home as seen in the TV show opening. Franklin's spokesperson told the reporter that they had done many things to slow the rate of tourists, but they could only do so much. The construction was necessary, she stated, to modernize the home and add earthquake protection.

In 1926 John Boegershausen applied for a legal name change. He ran a hardware store and customers would shorten his name to "Bughouse". Embarrassed by this, he requested a change to John Berger, which was granted. The rest of the family stuck with Boegershausen, even those in business. The Boegershausen Hardware Store would continue to operate for many years, even with the difficult name.

Boegershausen Bros. Hardware Store
John Boegershausen, with his brother, opened Boegershausen Bros. Hardware Store in San Francisco. The business was also known for metal fabrication, and tower and steeple construction. The company would go on to provide construction of almost all the church steeples in San Francisco between 1906 and 1940. The schematic provided shows a chimney cap of Boegershausen's design. John Boegershausen and his family would eventually occupy the house at 1709 Broderick Street.

John O'Brien's Tragic Suicide
John O'Brien, Thomas O'Brien's "wayward" son, committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid at a nearby saloon. He left behind three notes, one which read: "Dear Sir--This is a clear case of suicide. Ill health and no money the cause. J. W. O'Brien." Another read: "If I had my health I would not care, but you know how it is without it." The last card was a listing of debts he owed that should be paid. In response, his father said: "I am not greatly surprised at this tragic affair." Thomas O'Brien had tried to help by giving him a job in a clerical role when he was tax collector. "He was impulsive and erratic, yet I never thought he would end his days in such a terrible manner...We will have his body brought home and the past shall be buried with the dead."
