A St. Paul Garage Gets Remade Into a Kitchen

This post is a part of a series that gives an inside look behind the creative process of homes featured on the upcoming ASID MN Kitchen Tour on April 16-17, 2016. You’ll get to see each designer’s challenges and joys behind creating the perfect kitchen for their client. Today, we’re featuring the work of Monson Interior Design and DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen. What was your design dilemma? Our clients Kathrine and Jeffrey Tane had lived in their 1954 St. Paul home for 14 years and were now empty-nesters. They made the decision to stay in this home for as long as possible, and wanted to remodel it to personalize it for their current lifestyle with emphasis on how they cook and entertain. We were asked to design a new kitchen, large walk-in pantry, and a powder room all within the former garage footprint, and reconfigure the former kitchen into a new wet bar. Tell us about your source(s) of inspiration for this project. The clients and the house. Katherine and Jeff have an appreciation for contemporary design and the house is a classic Mid-Century structure on an unusually large lot with great views that include Katherine’s gardens. What were your top three go-to tools to get the job done? We had one important one: a computer-aided design program to help the clients visualize the project before they committed to the details. Tell us about the biggest challenge you encountered while executing the project and how did you overcome it? Marrying the modern functions and contemporary design that the Tanes wanted with the classic features of the Mid-Century home was our challenge. Our plan provides a large open entertainment space with optimal outdoor views. he wide opening from the new kitchen into the dining and wet bar area was planned to preserve the pattern of the existing wood paneling. The beautiful existing slate floor was retained for the new wet bar area and grey stained cork plank flooring was installed in the new kitchen and powder room; Horizontal grain wenge cabinets at the kitchen island and olive gloss RTF cabinets at the cooking wall are topped by Caesarstone quartz counters. Wet bar cabinets are textured melamine with custom back-painted glass countertops, which also forms the backsplash below the kitchen vent hood. Some cabinet drawers are fitted with Servo-Drive handleless mechanisms. The Monsons placed the new powder room in the former entryway from the garage to the old kitchen. The stone countertop for the floating vanity is reclaimed marble from the former master bath vanity. The pattern of ovals in the sconce light fixture inspired Lynn to design the custom mirror, which he commissioned JIT Classic Glass to fabricate as a laminated assembly of mirror, etched glass, and gold graphic film. What part of this project are you most proud of? The clients’ reaction to our work. Their investment in this remodel has brought a big return in the quality of life in their home, and we were honored to have a part in that.
