The first Catholic mass in Memphis was celebrated in the house, in the parlor. Mr. Magevney was a devout Catholic, as was his neighbor who attended. A traveling priest performed mass. The bureau in this image was used as the makeshift altar. The descendants of Eugene Magevney gave the property to the City of Memphis, which adapted and operated it as a house museum The home/museum had to close in 2005 due to budget cuts
