Super Bowl LII
For about 3 years, we had rented our guest room out to travelers through AirBnb. In 2018, Minneapolis hosted Super Bowl LII. Naturally, many people wanted to cash in on the event by renting their houses out, and we were no exception. Seeing an opportunity, we listed the entire house out to rent for the Super Bowl. It wasn't long before we got a rental request, and I confirmed the reservation. Neither my wife nor I are sports fans, so it was a great surprise to me when a few days later my wife looked up the name of our renter and discovered that this person was a linebacker for the New England Patriots. My wife became very concerned, thinking that someone was scamming us and going to turn our house into a cathouse for the event. It was puzzling to us why a Super Bowl athlete would be staying at our little house for the big weekend. After some more Googling, we learned that this player was sidelined for the remainder of the season due to an injury. While still puzzling, we decided to just see what happened. The day of their arrival, my wife left work early to meet our guests. She was quite relieved when the NFL player on the profile pulled up along with his girlfriend and his brother. My wife said they were extremely gracious and down to earth people. She did ask why they were renting our house instead of staying with the team. Our guest answered that since he was sidelined for the season, that gave him more leeway than the rest of the players. Had he stayed in the hotel with the team, he would have been required to go to all the team events, abide by curfew, etc. By staying off site, he could be more selective in what he wanted to do and not do with the team. We gave them their privacy during their stay and only told our neighbors that we had rented out the house, but didn't say to whom. We stayed with my sister and her husband in South Minneapolis and didn't tell them who was at our house until afterwards as my sister would no doubt have repeatedly circled our block trying to get a glimpse of our guests. This was the last time we rented on AirBnb. The guest room is now our daughter's room and the AirBnb amenities have given way to books and toys.
