National Register of Historic Places - Mitchell-Tappan House
Statement of Significance: The building was built in North Hibbing by Oliver Mining Company and served as the residence for various Oliver Mining Company officials from 1905 through the 1960s. It is representative of the lavish style of the company officials' home and reflects the wide social and economic gulf between the mining corporation operatives and the rest of the population. Oliver, of course, was the mining subsidiary of the U.S. Steel Trust and later the U.S. Steel Corporation. Oliver, as supplier to the largest U.S. producer of iron and steel, was also the major producer of hematite iron ore on the Lake Superior Iron Mining Ranges. Pentecost Mitchell and W.M. Tappan were superintendents of the US Steel-Oliver operations and were assigned to the Iron Range. Mitchell was the first resident, having worked with Lake Superior, Sellers, and Pillsbury mines and appointed superintendent of the Oliver's Hibbing district in 1899. The company built the house for Mitchell in 1905. Tappan, a later superintendent of the Hibbing district and resident of the house, was very much involved in the relocation of the town of North Hibbing. He was responsible for the house's relocation in 1920 to its present site in Hibbing. Subsequent research shows that the residence was constructed by the Oliver Mining Company for Pentecost Mitchell in 1897-98 when he was the first General Superintendent at Hibbing.
