National Register of Historic Places - Dinehart-Holt House

Statement of Significance: The Dinehart-Holt House Is significant for Its association with Christopher E. and Flora Dinehart, early residents of Slayton. Christopher Dinehart was born In Great Barrington, Massachusetts, in 1845 and lived In New York before moving to De Witt, Iowa, in 1866 where he secured a bank position. In 1875 he married Flora Dennison who had returned to Iowa after receiving her education In New York and Mt. Carroll, Illinois. They then moved to Chicago where Dinehart worked for nine years with the McCormick Machine Company. In 1884, the Dineharts moved to the city of Slayton (platted in 1881) and opened the State Bank of Slayton. Dinehart remained president of the bank until his death in 1927. He also served as mayor of Slayton and with his wife was active in social, civic and educational activities in the community. At the time of Mrs. Dinehart's death in 1938 the house passed to her daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Harvey Holt; Mr. Holt was a well-known attorney practicing In Murray County. The house remains In the Holt family today. Built In 1891, the house was designed by Mankato architect, Frank Thayer, who also designed the Murray County Courthouse (built during the same year on a neighboring site). The house's locally distinctive design and association with the Dineharts' most active years in the community mark It as an Important residence In Slayton.
