Girard-Peterson House, 332 Spruce St Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA

No. 332 Spruce is one of a row of houses built by Stephen Girard around 1820; today it is home to Charles Peterson, one of the founders and early leaders of the Historic American Buildings Survey. Peterson`s 1933 memo regarding the mission of HABS is often pointed to as the moment of creation or born-on date of the program; while the genesis of HABS was the work of many, Peterson`s pivotal memo and his support of the survey did much to promote it and sustain it long after the other New Deal programs closed.
