4038 Valentine Court, Arden Hills, MN, USA
Designed by Brooks Cavin. for Mr. & Mrs. Roy W. Hawkinson, this single-family home was built in 1951 as a modern single story, 2-3 bedroom home with an attached garage. Since 1951 multiple additions have been added to the house, all designed by the original architect, Brooks Cavin. The home connects with the surrounding landscape and each addition has maintained the modern aesthetic with built in cabinetry, floor to ceiling windows, and unique detailing. History This 1951 modern home shows the residential style of Brooks Cavin. The original architectural drawings are pencil on paper and are kept in the Northwest Architectural Archives collection [1] . The original design was built in 1951. Three years later the owners added a study to the corner between the kitchen and utility room. Later they added a split-level to the south at an angle. The addition created a new master bedroom and bath with a balcony upstairs and a guest room/game room and bathroom in the basement. The basement opens to the back yard. All additions appear to be seamless from inside the home. Cavin designed each addition and his modern aesthetic is carried through the entire house. Each room has built in cabinetry that compliments the spaces they occupy as was typical in the modern home movement. The original owners of this 1951 home owned a large area of land in Arden Hills next to Valentine Lake. They used the land for a recreational horse farm. Since then it has been subdivided into a suburb community. Even with the new neighborhood, this home maintains its original view of Valentine Lake to the east and south. The east and south facades are ribbon windows that optimize the view of a sloping backyard, trees (that mask Old South H.H. 10) and a reveal to the lake beyond. The current home is approximately 2,700 square feet with four bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths on a 0.83 acre lot. The yard includes a pool and fire-pit. The most recent changes to the home included a kitchen remodel (done within the last ten years). The counter-space and appliance areas have increased with the addition of an island. The changes meld well with the original open design. This home is well maintained and a beautiful tribute to the modern house movement in Minnesota. And featured in the 2013 Docomomo Minnesota Tour of Modern Homes. Badges This place is part of the ARCH5674 Class Project First Owner: Mr. & Mrs. Roy W. Hawkinson
