4745 Girard Ave S, Minneapolis, MN, USA

4745 Girard Ave S Home History Benjamin Gingold, 1958 A striking but little-known house from the 1950s. Finished in white stucco, the house thrusts forward on its hilly lot with a two-story- high wall of windows extending over a mezzanine and garage. Off to one side, a winding stone staircase leads to the front door, located beside a mysterious round tower that looks a bit like a silo but in fact holds a spiral staircase executed entirely in concrete. The interior is organized around a dramatic living room ringed by balconies. Gin- gold, who went on to design the 740 River Drive Apartments (1961) in St. Paul, built the house for him self and his wife. In the 1960s he moved to England, where he spent the rest of his life. Citation: Millett, Larry. AIA Guide to the Minneapolis Lake District. Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2009.
