During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a captain in the 23rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment where he was eventually promoted to Colonel. He also served as Michigan's Secretary of State in the late 1860s. Approximate date - the how was acquired by Charles and Mary Babcock. The house was nearly lost in the fall of 1992 when a fire started from a workman's paint removal equipment. The original 3rd floor was lost. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries.
