John Banister House, 56 Pelham St Newport, Newport County, RI
The center hall plan, gambrel-roofed house built by John Banister was similar in appearance to the William Hunter House. The doorway with its "Doric-inspired pilasters framing a low, wide archway" and classical colonettes is a nineteenth-century addition. John Banister married Hermione Pelham and it was she who owned the lot where they built their house. Banister was also Peter Harrison`s brother-in-law. The house was sold out of the family in 1821. (See Buildings of Rhode Island, p. 537)
