Original Owner: Roger Morris (British Col.) and Mary Philipse Between September 14 and October 20, 1776, George Washington used the mansion as headquarters after his army evacuated Brooklyn Heights following their loss to the British Army in the Battle of Long Island. The house was purchased by New York City in 1903 from the owners at the time, the Earles, with the help of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
