John Sutherland House
Circa 1883, John Sutherland constructed a house on this lot in Greeleys Addition of Stillwater. In 1884, Sutherland was assessed $250 for the property. The 1892 city directory, lists Charles Wigren, a rafter, and Malcolm Christianson, a laborer, as the primary residents of the house. Johan G. Johnanson, a laborer, also lived here as a boarder. This simple, one-and-a-half-story, Folk Victorian frame house has clapboard siding, a cross gable roof, and two-over-two and three-over-one double-hung windows, the latter of which date from around 1920. The house originally had a wraparound front porch that was removed and replaced sometime after 1956 by the one-story, enclosed porch now located on the southeast corner of the house. This porch features decorative stick detailing in the gable. Also after 1956, the one-story, gabled wing on the rear elevation had a second story added to it. This addition respects the design, scale, and materials of the original building. A circa 1950 garage is located in the back yard.
