Horatio West Court Apartments, 140 Hollister St Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, CA

An early example of social housing in the International style. In the second story living rooms, Gill used continuous windows a hallmark of the International style for the first time in his career. The Horatio West Court, 1919-1922, its typical of Irving John Gill`s social housing for low income groups in its compactness, the off street environment created, and the use of concrete as a material. It is unique in plan and in the transparency of the second floor of the two-story attached dwellings.
