Marquette Building, 140 South Dearborn St Chicago, Cook County, IL
A typical Chicago School building, the Marquette stands as an artistically-conceived expression of its underlying steel frame. Not only was the building a pioneering effort in the use of the steel frame, but it was a pioneer in design. The firm of Holabird and Roche, one of Chicago`s most well-known architectural firms and very prolific during its 45-year existence, used the exterior treatment of the Marquette Building as a point of departure for many of its later buildings. The high level of artistic excellence reached by the several artists and craftsmen responsible is also noteworthy.
