1519 Bryant Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN, USA

"Remuddled" 1 1/2 story single family home in the historic Old Highland neighborhood. Built in 1912, with some use of salvaged materials in construction (notched beams, salvaged studs, etc.). Originally had gas lighting throughout; was probably wired for electric light by the 1920s. Floor plan of the house has remained largely unchanged since construction. Interior woodwork is intact and natural. Handblown cylinder glass windows are mostly intact. As is typical, the upstairs was probably not used as living space until fairly recently. Can, perhaps, be referred to as a bungalow, though some features are atypical. For example, the roof pitch is rather steep and there is no fireplace. There was a carriage house on the northwest part of the lot at one time. It has been replaced by a circa 1980s 2 1/2 stall garage. A very large number of old nails (ca 1890s) have been found in the yard to the south of the house. These could be from a structure that was on the site prior to 1912. History: House is currently undergoing a period-style renovation that began in 2007. Future projects include restoration of lap siding, replacing upstairs windows with a style more fitting of the house, and restoring all window drip edge that was cut off when modern siding was installed. Memory: I bought the house in August of 2007. It had been sitting empty for approximately 2 years prior. I am catching up on years of deferred maintenance and un-doing decades of poor remodeling. Currently doing a gut-remodel of the kitchen. -Caleb Lauritsen
