National Register of Historic Places - Zrust,Alois,House and Carpenter's Catalogue Houses
West Main Street Houses Statement of Significance: The Alois Zrust House and the "Carpenter's Catalogue Houses" represent three well preserved examples of local craftsmanship applied to residential design of the nineteenth century. The "Carpenter's Catalogue Houses" at 417 and 429 West Main Street were constructed in 1896 and 1898 respectively. They were constructed by Albert Hedtke, a carpenter, cabinet maker and owner of the local lumberyard. The design features applied to both houses represent a synthesis of the builder's and owner's taste with the availability of mass produced "catalogue" architectural elements at the' local lumberyard. The two houses contain numerous design features popular during the late nineteenth century. These design features include corner square based towers with octagonal roofs, stick work and shingle decoration in the gables, turned porch posts, spindle work Poitiers. Gothic quatrefoils in the porch spandrels and decorative pressed glass panels in the front entry doors. The Alois Zrust House at 453 West Main Street was constructed in 1903 by Charles Klatt, Sr. for the proprietor of Waconia's largest hotel. Charles Klatt, Sr. was a local brick mason who also operated a cast concrete factory for over thirty years. Klatt's talent as an amateur architect and brick mason are apparent in his use of wood and Chaska brick which resulted in a two story, multi-gabled roof building with corbelled hoods over windows and doors, star-end tension rods at the second story level, a 2/3 front porch with turned posts, scroll sawn spandrels, spindle work Poitiers, and a second story turned post balustrade. All three houses are in an excellent state of preservation. The houses at 417 and 429 West Main Street have been occupied by the original owners' family since their construction.
