Major Josiah Coffin House, 60 Cliff Rd, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA

A large two-story lean-to style, it is one of the oldest houses on Nantucket. / This house was built in 1724 by Major Josiah Coffin for his son, Josiah Coffin, Esquire. In 1811 the son died, leaving the property to his third wife, Elizabeth, and after her death, to be divided among his heirs. In 1854, Josiah Gardner bought the house and land at public auction. The house remained in the Gardner family until 1924. In 1925, it was purchased by its present owner, Mrs. N. Emerson Tuttle. One of the oldest houses on the island, it is a very fine example of the early "salt-box" type of architecture on Nantucket.
