Sandanwede, 79 Hulbert Ave Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA
One of the few remaining examples of the large summer cottages built in Nantucket at the end of the nineteenth century. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the evolution of Shingle Style architecture coincided with a growing popularity of seaside resorts. On Nantucket Island, where shingles has been the traditional building material for over two centuries, the influence of mainland resort architecture in the popular Shingle Style was readily assimilated. Sandanwede, built for Edwin J. Hulbert in 1881 as a modest beach cottage, was subsequently enlarged to become the most outstanding domestic example of nineteenth century Shingle Style architecture on Nantucket.
