Milner Road Residence

Built in 1929, this residence exemplifies the Mediterranean style. The three-story home is clad in textured stucco and features a tiled roof, wrought-iron hardware and grille work. This residence is located in Hollywood's historic Whitley Heights neighborhood. Developer H. J. Whitley planned Whitley Heights as an upper-middle-class, single-family residential neighborhood designed to resemble a Mediterranean hillside village. Design guidelines required houses in the neighborhood to be of a "general Italian or Spanish type of architecture with plastered exteriors." Today, Whitley Heights is known for its consistent overall aesthetic, since many residences have retained their original features. The Conservancy holds an easement protecting the exterior façade of the Milner Road home, including the original windows, paver tiles, and ironwork. It is one of two easements held by the Conservancy in Whitley Heights, along with a residence on Holly Hill Terrace. On August 9, 2019, a fire broke out at the residence. The blaze and resulting smoke caused extensive damage to interior spaces and the roof’s structural supports. The exterior façade appears to be in good condition despite the interior damage. The Conservancy and the City of L.A.’s Office of Historic Resources are working with the home’s owners to ensure all rehabilitation work meets the Secretary of the Interior Standards.
