Byron Howes House
The Byron Howes House (also known as the Howes-Graus House) is a historic house located at 718 Vermillion Street in Hastings, Minnesota. Description and history The house was built in 1868 in the Italianate style by Byron Howes, an early resident of Hastings. The Italianate style was being popularized by Andrew Jackson Downing around the time. Byron Howes helped to establish two banks, one in Hastings and one in St. Paul. He also served as a deputy county treasurer and held other public offices in Hastings. The house was later purchased by Wendel Graus, a businessman involved in hardware and lumber businesses. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

National Register of Historic Places - Byron Howes House
Statement of Significance: The Byron Howes House constructed from 1868-1870, is significant due to its association with one of Hastings earliest and most influential settlers and the architectural style that it represents. Byron Howes was born in Putnam County, New York on March 9, 1833, He came to Hastings, Minnesota in 1856. He was a banker and established the Farmers and Trades Bank of Hastings in 1872. Howes then went on to become one of the founders and the largest stockholder in the German American Bank of St. Paul, Minnesota. He held many public offices in the City of Hastings including City Alderman, City Treasurer, Deputy County Treasurer and School Board Treasurer. He died April 6, 1886, at the age of 53. The home Byron Howes constructed is an excellent example; of the Towered mode of the Italian Villa style of architecture popularized by Andrew Jackson Downing. For over a century the house and surrounding ground have retained their original integrity.
